Betty was born 12 May 1937 in Greenock, Scotland, a welcome addition to the Mcready Family, a sibling for her brothers and sisters. The family like most families in the area never had much in them days,I understand this because she would tell me all they got for Christmas was an apple in their stocking and maybe an orange if they were lucky, but none the less they were extremely happy. My Gran as most people wouldn't speak of her early stages of life due to the fact she had trouble remembering them like we all do but I have heard many stories from when she was 15 and onwards. She started to work in the Lyle and Tate Sugar House were she met a lot of her lifelong friends, she enjoyed the work there but couldn't believe she worked at such a young age when she spoke about it, She used to talk of the pay they received and how It would probably only amount to under £2 per week. She used to laugh when she told me these stories as she compared her lifestyle then to mine now. She would talk of how she had all of her clothes passed down through the family and back then you would only get a new dress or a new pair of shoes every couple of months. Moving on to her later years she met my Granda, In meeting him they travelled the world together as he worked building roads in foreign parts of the world. He used to travel alot to the Middle-East to carry out these kind of jobs, they lived in Qatar for a short period of time where my Granda had a house boy to do all these jobs for him, my gran used to get angry and tell the boy to sit down and put his feet up and she would make him a "Wee Cup Of Tea", this is a prime example of what kind of woman she was, A kind and giving person. When they returned to Scotland they set up many business's together. The most successful business they created was running a local pub called The Lighthouse Bar this is where Betty spent many of her best years. She enjoyed working behind the bar and mixing with others, going ocassional trips to Blackpool with the Golden Girls is something she got out of the pub. I treasure every emory I can think of each and every day about my Gran, I cherish the moments we used to sit together when I was alot younger APPARENTLY listening to Daniel O Donnell as she was a great fan of his and when she would watch me on a Saturday Night and we'd sit down and watch 101 dalmatians, to the latter years where I still kept the strong relationship with my gran going.
